Joshua Tree National Park -

Split Rock

Split Rock in Joshua Tree National Park is one of those classic desert spots where nature seems to have been playing around with giant building blocks. The name comes from a massive boulder that looks as if it was split neatly in two, right down the middle. It is a popular destination for both casual visitors and rock climbers.

The Split Rock Loop Trail, about 2 miles long, winds through a landscape of rugged boulders, desert shrubs, and Joshua trees. Along the way, you can see other notable formations like Face Rock. Because it is a loop, you can start and end at the Split Rock Picnic Area, which makes it convenient for a short hike.

For climbers, Split Rock is a well-known area with a variety of routes on the surrounding walls and boulders, ranging from beginner to advanced. It is also a quieter alternative to busier climbing spots like Hidden Valley.
