The Ancestral Mojave River
Victorville Basin![]() The Victorville Basin is a central geomorphic feature within the ancestral Mojave River system, representing a transitional basin between the San Bernardino Mountain headwaters and the downstream lake chain. GEOLOGIC SETTINGThe basin formed as a result of tectonic activity associated with the San Andreas fault system. Uplift of the surrounding mountain ranges altered regional gradients and reduced the efficiency of drainage across the area.TECTONIC DEVELOPMENTAs the San Andreas fault continued to uplift the San Bernardino Mountains, regional drainage toward the Pacific Ocean was progressively slowed and disrupted. This change in gradient caused water to accumulate within the Victorville Basin. For an extended period, the basin functioned as a marshland, holding standing water and supporting wetland conditions rather than a through flowing river system. HYDROLOGIC TRANSITIONBefore the Mojave River established its inland course, the Victorville Basin acted as a zone of temporary storage and poor drainage. Over time, continued tectonic uplift reversed the regional slope, redirecting drainage away from the ocean and toward the interior of the Mojave Desert. This transition marked a critical stage in the development of the Mojave River as an internally drained system. SIGNIFICANCEThe Victorville Basin represents an intermediate phase between external drainage to the Pacific and the fully developed internal drainage system of the Mojave Desert. Its history as a marshland illustrates how tectonic forces can interrupt and reorganize river systems over geologic time.< Previous <> Next > |
