Victor Valley
Bell Mountain
Geographical FeaturesLocation: Bell Mountain is located northeast of Victorville, California, in the Sidewinder Valley, near Apple Valley. It is a prominent feature of the Mojave Desert landscape, easily recognizable for its unique bell-like shape.Elevation: The summit of Bell Mountain rises to 3,897 feet (1,188 meters) above sea level. ![]() USGS MAP 1932 - 1956 ed. Geology: The mountain is composed of ancient ocean-bottom sediments capped with a hard layer of volcanic material. This volcanic "hat" was deposited by eruptions from distant sources, not the mountain itself. The erosion-resistant cap protected the underlying sediment, leading to the mountain's distinctive shape. Bell Mountain Wash: Nearby, Bell Mountain Wash is an 11-mile dry stream bed that flows to the Mojave River, about 2 miles north of Victorville. The wash skirts just north of the mountain. Historical SignificanceHomesteading and Early Settlers: Homesteading in the area began as early as 1912, with one of the earliest settlers being Mrs. Eleanor Washington. The land attracted miners, farmers, and other pioneers seeking opportunity in the High Desert.Community Development: By the mid-20th century, a small community with about 150 residents had formed around Bell Mountain. It was located approximately 10 miles northeast of Victorville and was primarily supported by mining and farming. Mojave Northern Railway: The Mojave Northern Railway passed through the area, connecting Leon (near the Southwestern Portland Cement Company) to the company's quarry near the Sidewinder Mine. Initially certified as a public carrier, it transitioned to a private "plant facility" in 1925. Creosote Bush Scrub HabitatHigh Desert Plains & Hills Ecology
