Desert magic

Cryptobiotic crust is a layer of biotic organisms in the surface of desert soils. These fragile, living soil crusts, although usually hidden, can be seen here by the trail. They are composed of bacteria, algae, and lichen, all of which help to fix nitrogen in the soil and stabilize soils against wind erosion.
