Annual flowers

Seeds of annual flowers can remain dormant underground for many years. In years with the right combination of rain and warmth, a carpet of bloom can cover the desert floor. Desert tortoises emerge from hibernation to eat the succulent plants. Much of the new seed crop is collected by kangaroo rats and harvester ants.
