Desert mistletoe berries

Most times of the year, you can see the handsome Phainopepla birds flying through the wash. The males are jet black, females are grey and both have long tails, white wing patches, crests, and red eyes. In winter, they eat the juicy berries of the Desert Mistletoe, swallowing them whole. As they perch on the upper branches of a tree, the undigested seed drops on the limbs below where they often sprout.
