Kelso Dunes Wilderness

SIZE: 129,580 acres

LOCATION: San Bernardino County; 50 miles south of Baker, California

NATURAL RESOURCES: Within this wilderness lie two sweeping valleys: the rolling Bristol Mountain and the Kelso Sand Dunes -- the second tallest dunes in the California Desert. The sand dune system lies within the Mojave National Preserve's portion of the wilderness. Hiking to the top of the dunes is a popular activity. The stark Bristol Mountains, located in the western portion of this vast wilderness, offer outstanding challenges for only the most experienced desert hiker, as well as opportunities for solitude. ACCESS: To access the southwest corner of this wilderness, take the Kelbaker Road exit from Interstate 40 and go north for approximately 4.6 miles. Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
