Early Desert Dwellers

Small bands of Desert Indians lived seasonally in this and other areas of the park where food plants, animals and water were available. Hollowed rocks used for grinding seeds and nuts have been found, and trails marking routes between water and campsites are visible on the hillsides.

Rock overhangs and caves in nearby mountains provided shelter and a place to store their pottery containers and stone tools. Occasionally flash floods will wash shards (broken pieces of pottery) out into the open. If you see any, leave them behind for others to discover. They are a link in the living history of the Mojave Desert. It is unlawful to disturb or remove archeological remnants.

Should you come across something unusual, please report it to park personnel so that it can be photographed and documented on site. Careful study of such finds helps us to better understand the life of these early desert dwellers.
